Program for January
Trunk Show/Jane Smith - Thursday, January 15
Jane is one of the founding members of the Green Valley Quilt Guild. We are excited to see what she will share with us. Jane learned to sew as a teenager, and even made dresses for friends in college. After getting married and having a couple of girls, she sewed for them as well as herself. In 1984 a friend in Albuquerque where her husband, Chuck, was stationed, invited her to free quilting classes at her church. The only thing participants had to contribute was a 12.5-inch unfinished block for a group quilt that once finished, would be auctioned off by the church. All work was done by hand--piecing and quilting. It didn't take long for Jane to decide that for her king-sized quilt, she could make some of the blocks much faster using a sewing machine. Chuck was transferred before the church's quilt was finished, but Jane did learn to hand quilt. During the next assignment in Florida, Jane made a quilt for each of her girls' beds, hand quilted them, but never finished the king-sized quilt for her bed. It wasn't until Chuck's retirement in 1994 and their move to Kansas, (where Jane got a job working in a fabric and craft store), that her quilting moved to the next level. Upon moving to Arizona, she discovered paper piecing and joined the Tucson Quilt Guild. Today her house is filled with quilts, and most of her quilts go to charity as she has no grandchildren

Challenges
2026 UFO Challenge is officially underway!  By popular demand, the UFO Challenge will once again take place for 2026. Janell Duncan is the new chairperson.
The first opportunity you have to sign up to participate will be at the January guild meeting. If you choose to join, Janell will be available to add you to the official participation list and collect a $5.00 entry fee.
The rules for the challenge are the same as in the previous year.  (They are printed in the January Quilting Threads newsletter, pages 6 and 7).  In a nutshell, this challenge is designed to encourage you work on existing projects in your stash as of 12/31/2025. From these existing projects, you may pick up to 12 projects to work on in the coming year. Each month a project # will be in the guild newsletter. This prompt is intended to gently suggest you work on that project for the month. You can follow the prompt, or choose another project on your list – it’s up to you.
When you complete a project (100% finished), bring it and your project list to the guild meeting and Janell will sign off on your list. A ticket will then be added to the drawing in your name
