What is an Opportunity Quilt?

Each year the guild collaborates on creating and selling chances to win an opportunity quilt. The guild has used Opportunity Quilts as fundraisers in the past. However, when Covid shut down our ability to stage a quilt show, we lost a primary income source. Opportunity quilts became an important source of revenue as well as a way for members to collaborate on creating the quilt.

Opportunity Quilts help connect our guild to the communities of Green Valley and the larger area south of Tucson, like Vail, Tubac, Rio Rico, etc.  Bringing the quilt to local venues raises awareness of quilting in our area.

Chances to win the current opportunity quilt are sold on our website, at the Green Valley Farmer’s market on Wednesdays, at our meetings, and at our quilt shows.

Creating each quilt requires dozens of hours of effort, and an investment in fabrics donated by guild members.  Each week, our "Quilt Mom", Joan Fahning and her trusty group of ticket seller volunteers transport the quilt to craft fairs and farmers' markets and spend the mornings chatting with shoppers.  New guild members often say that they weren't aware of our vibrant, active guild until they saw us at a community event.

2023 Quilt -Sonoran Beauty- Drawing held Dec. 2023
Barbara Bain’s winning ticket was drawn at the Dec. 2023 meeting. Here she is with her new quilt.

The “Sonoran Beauty” quilt was made by the Mod Squad, a small group of quilters who enjoy “modern quilting” or “art quilting” . The Mod Squad as a group decided to participate in the Modern Quilt Guild’s Community Outreach Challenge at QuiltCon 2023 in Atlanta, GA USA.

Pieced and designed by Cheryl Osburn, Katie Templeton, Teena Sweet, Jeanie Hurst, AliBaxley, Merry Kay Strohm, Karen Laird, Sue Morgan, and several others. Quilted by Katie Templeton Challenge Summary
  • --Use at least 3 colors, --Use solids & prints --No neutrals --Twin size. 65” x 85” --Enter Quilt December 1 - 15, 2022.
There was the choose of 2 colorways, we chose the pink and purple hues. The Mod Squad donates all collaborative quilts to a charity; we decided to give it the the Valley Quilters Guild to raise funds. Our quilt was designed, pieced, and quilted by members of the Modern Quilt Guild. Mostly it was designed as we went, Improv style. It is made using 1/2 square triangles.  All of the fabric was donated by members of the Valley Quilters Guild. It made it interesting to use the fabric we had, not go buy the specific colors we needed. We had a great time working on this quilt and getting to know each other better.

2022-2023 Quilt - Made by the Block of the Month bee

The winning ticket was drawn at our March 2023 Quilt Show  called Splendor in the Desert, at Historic Canoa Ranch.

With its Southwest theme and beautiful colors, it was a real moneymaker for the guild.
The pattern is a Wing and  Prayer pattern called Sangria. The colors were designed around fabrics that were donated by guild members. It was a king size quilt.

The quilt was won by a ticket purchased at the Green Valley Heirloom Market by a woman from Alaska who lives in Tucson Estates.
